We Put Mother Nature in a Home, take two

The modern shady tree beside a lazy brook
Is a five-ounce contraption with a color display,
Or, if you’re serious about it,
A contemplative rock,
Assuming you’re lucky enough to run across one
On the race to work, or class, or distraction.

But there’s just nothing fashionable about rocks—
Even our paperweights
Come in etched glass and silver plate.

I don't like "contraption."
Thoughts?

Do you remember when I said...

How 'bout "contraceptive"?

"clever"

Yeah, I don't like "contraption" either.

But I like this version better.

"a five-ounce white box" maybe?

or, maybe I'm just totally off my rocker... I don't even know if this makes sense, but... "a five-ounce Aryan box"?

It must be the air up here.

I'd go with "complication," but you'd be stealing it from one of my Italy blogs about my Bulgarian language teacher, which stole it from a line in a Zadie Smith novel. Well, "stole" it kind of strong, when it comes to a single noun. I like to think of it as a shout-out--a word too good to be used so well just once.

marvel.
ostententation.
frame.
figurine.
flannelgraph. as in, "ooo, flannelgraph."
